What a wonderful fall we are having on the farm! Eric our beekeeper has been up several times, first to harvest the honey then to build a protective cover for the hives - we are determined to have them make it through the winter this year.
We were excited that Pope Francis mentioned Dorothy Day in his speech to Congress. Carmina was able to attend the Papal Mass in Philadelphia with Our Lady of Victory Parish and Fr. Dan Toomey, who is a big supporter of the farm.
Kyle and Val came from Texas for a fews days - both requested custom hats! We thought Kyle looked quite stylish in his.
Many thanks to Monica and Dennis of A Suri Farm in Myerstown, PA for their donation of over 200 pounds of alpaca fleece. Monica heard that we make hats for the poor from the sheep fleece and wanted to help out. We have a nice harvest of hats ready to be distributed.
In mid-October, we received a phone call from the
Trinity Hills Catholic Worker Farm in Missouri asking if we could care for an Eritrean refugee and her young son until their house in Philadelphia was ready. We welcomed Heaven and Simon to the farm with open arms, and have been enjoying their presence, as well as eating delicious Eritrean food! The community has been very generous with donating clothing for mother and son, who are not used to the cold temperatures of northeastern PA.
Most recently, we were honored to host Martha Hennessey, the granddaughter of Dorothy Day, during her recent speaking tour of several local colleges. Martha grew up on a farm, and enjoyed working with some of our fleece, including spinning Rambo and picking Fern. We had a wonderful visit with our new friend.
